The wind is there. The chart too. The navigator is ready.
And yet… it doesn’t move.
Why?
Because the navigator doesn’t really want to leave.
We talk a lot about communication. Techniques, tools, methods.
But we rarely talk about what happens before we open our mouths.
Before sending that message. Before walking into that meeting. Before having the conversation we’ve been putting off for three weeks.

What I call the Communication Compass is exactly that: a pause before every interaction that matters.
Four questions. Four cardinal points.
🧭 Will — Do I genuinely want to communicate here? And with what intention?
🧭 Know — Do I know what I want to achieve? Do I have the right words?
🧭 Can — Do I have the courage to say what needs to be said? Is the timing right?
🧭 Must — Is what I’m about to say fair, ethical, responsible?
The sailboat moves when all four forces align.
The sail (Will) captures the energy. The chart (Know) sets the course. The wind and hull (Can) make the crossing possible. The maritime code (Must) prevents shipwrecks.
Remove one of those elements. Watch what happens.
I’ve coached managers, executives, entire teams.
The problem was almost never what they said.
It was why they said it. Or why they didn’t.
A team member who never gives difficult feedback: lacking Can (courage).
A manager who communicates without clear intent: a Will problem.
A well-crafted message misaligned with personal values: a fracture in Must.
So here’s the uncomfortable question:
Which dimension lets you down most often?
Will — when you dodge the conversation?
Know — when you can’t find the right words?
Can — when you keep waiting for the “right moment” indefinitely?
Must — when you say what’s expected rather than what’s true?
I don’t believe we’re bad communicators.
I believe we often communicate on autopilot, without checking our compass.
The Communication Compass isn’t just another model.
It’s a pause. A recalibration. Before the sailboat heads in the wrong direction.
Have you ever navigated blind through an important conversation?
